EVALUATION PROCEDURES

Complete medical history that includes any symptoms you are experiencing. Physical examination that includes a digital exam to examine the prostate.

DRE or digital rectal examination works well because the prostate lies in front of the rectum.This simple procedure allows your MD to determine whether the prostate is enlarged or has abnormal lumps and texture. The examination is minimally uncomfortable but not painful. Men over the age of 50 should have a rectal exam once every year. African American men or any with a family history of prostrate cancer should begin these annual exams at age 40.

A urinalysis or semen analysis is sometimes done to check urine for the presence of infection or blood

In addition to the rectal exam, the PSA test is an important tool in prostate cancer detection. PSA stands for Prostat e-Specific Antigen and is produced only by the cells of the prostate. PSA can be released into the bloodstream in higher than normal amounts when there is prostrate enlargement, infection, or cancer. Because PSA can be higher than expected for a number of reasons it is important that your doctor interpret your PSA with your family history, prostate size, and urinary symptoms in mind. PSA testing should also be done once a year for men over the age of 50 and for African American men or men with a family history of prostate cancer should consider prostate cancer after age 40.
